Choose A Vibrator – Internal Play
Written by SheVibe
Internal vibrators can encompass g-spot vibrators, classic vibrators, vibrating dildos, and vibrating prostate or anal toys. It’s always important to choose non-porous, body-safe materials whenever possible but especially important for internal sex toys. Stick to ABS plastic and silicone for the best, and safest, experience. When considering a vibrator for prostate or anal play, only choose toys that have an obvious flared base to ensure they don’t get lost (yes, it happens, and can require medical attention - lubed up toys and fingers are slippery!). While many people agree that vibrations on external genitals is an awesome thing, it seems that vibrations internally are a little more polarizing. You might love it, you might not care a fig about it. There are a lot of nerve-endings in the whole butt region, for example, and vibrations might be overwhelming for some who feel that fullness and pressure are already more than enough. For those with a g-spot and clitoris, some may feel that their g-spot isn’t responsive to vibrations but the vast real estate of the internal legs of the clitoris can respond really well to vibration. If you’re curious, give them a shot! Make sure you do your homework and research the myriad of reviews out there on the glorious interwebs.
Dual Purpose and Dual-Stimulation Vibrators
There are many “rabbit” style vibrators which, at first, seem to solve the problem of “not enough hands”. But everyone’s genitals are different and a rabbit vibrator that may perfectly fit one person’s g-spot and clitoris may not line up well at all for another person. Or, you may find that the vibrations are not strong enough on one portion of your anatomy but are just right on another. I would recommend getting comfortable with separate vibrators, first, before jumping into dual-stimulation vibrators right away. If you want to try a less-expensive, moderate rabbit style consider the CalExotics Silicone Bunny Kiss or Blush Novelties Hop Line. Dual-stimulation vibrators also exist for prostate play, because many people really enjoy vibrations against the perineum (which can stimulate the prostate externally).
Dual purpose is another matter. Often, a vibrator sold as a g-spot vibrator can be really great for external genital stimulation. Many people desire something more substantial, or with a handle, so that they can apply vibrations to the clitoris during sex without their hand being in the way of all the action. Also, many wand vibrators are dual (or more!) purpose when you factor in attachments.
Classic Vibrators
These can be the simple “slimline” plastic vibrators that date back to the 70’s, or realistically textured vibrators. They are generally straight in overall shape, with or without added ridges and bumps for texture. Here on this site we refer to them as "insertable vibrators" They offer the feeling of penetration and sometimes fullness/stretching but may not do much for your g-spot unless you angle it severely. These can also be great for those who prefer rubbing/massage against the g-spot but have a finicky pubic bone which can become irritated by heavily curved “G-spot” style vibrators. The Gaia Eco line by Blush are simple, eco-friendly, entry level vibes. A nice rechargeable option would be the Rocks Off Chaiamo.
G-Spot Vibrators
These vibrators are curved in some way - whether they have a pronounced, angle head or the entire shaft is curved, the aim is to easily hit the g-spot which is located on the belly-button side of the vaginal canal and varies somewhat in location and sensitivity from person to person. Usually these vibrators are very firm and won’t bend, because many people need pressure of some type on their g-spot. If you don’t like a lot of pressure on your g-spot but still like the curved shaft or angled head, scan reviews for mentions of a flexible shaft. Well-rated G-spot vibrators include the Lelo Mona, the Pillow Talk line, Lora DiCarlo Drift, or We-Vibe Rave.
While the shape of a g-spot vibrator would work for prostate stimulation you have to make sure there is some sort of flared base, for safety.
Prostate Vibrators
These can range from a blobby, lazy-kidney-bean sort of shape to simply something curved like a typical G-spot vibrator. These aren’t always meant to stay in one place, so they will often not have a thin neck. Any good prostate vibrator, no matter the length, will always have an obvious, flared base. When in doubt, refer to the Shevibe icons on the item description to see if something is considered anal-safe. Many prostate vibrators will also be dual-stimulation vibrators which vibrate internally and externally, to hit the prostate from all angles, so to speak. Check out the Lelo Hugo options for something mid-priced that is also powerful, or the Nexus Range.
Vibrating Butt Plugs
Not everything made for the butt is meant to stimulate the prostate and these more universally shaped butt plugs can do everything from provide gentle stimulation to creating that sense of fullness. Some vibrating butt plugs have a removable bullet while some have an integrated motor; some will be operated by the push of a button and others by a remote (wireless or wired). These will always have a distinct, flared base for safety. Since there are many nerve endings at the anus, even if the vibrations seem focused on the neck of the plug, it can still transmit a lot of pleasurable sensation. Not everyone’s butt likes vibration so starting off with something mild and affordable is your best bet. Tantus makes a few vibrating plugs that have removable bullets so you can upgrade to the We-Vibe Tango later on if you like the sensation but feel that the vibrations aren’t powerful enough.
Vibrating Dildos
This section might confuse you. You might ask “What’s the difference between a vibrator and a vibrating dildo?”. For my definition, a vibrating dildo has a removable motor that can be upgraded, replaced or simply removed if you decide you don’t want vibrations today. This type is often made by prominent dildo manufacturers like Tantus and Vixen and are anal-safe and harness-compatible. Usually, the included vibrating bullet is not very effective; the vibrations from a small bullet need to transfer through (usually) a lot of silicone and can often dampen considerably on the journey. This can sometimes be fixed by upgrading your bullet to the rumbly powerhouse bullet called the We-Vibe Tango. It is similar in size to Rocks Off RO-80mm bullets and Tantus bullets (the ones with the pointed tip).
As with all sex toys, reading unbiased reviews from bloggers can often help you decide if the tool you’re looking at is right for you. Keep in mind that often it can take a few sex toys in your arsenal before you figure out exactly what your body prefers. When you’re looking at the options on the market, you will notice that the less expensive models are battery-powered and the more expensive are rechargeable. As a rule, battery-powered vibrators are more noisy than rechargeable. Both types can run the gamut from mild, surface-buzzy vibrations to powerful, deep and rumbling vibrations. Try to choose something that has numerous settings, that fits your budget and don’t be discouraged if your first purchase isn’t the perfect fit for you. Getting to know what is pleasurable for your body is half the fun, take your time, be kind to yourself and enjoy!
