Choose A Vibrator – External Play
Written by SheVibe
Settling on a vibrator can be rather complicated so we’ve divided it up into two guides - external use (clitoris, penis, vulva) and internal use (internal clitoris, g-spot, prostate, and all other feel-good spots). Many people like adding a vibrator to their sexual tool box for partner play or solo play because of the variety in sensation, while some people have extreme difficulty achieving orgasm without the aid of a vibrator. Whether your anorgasmia is related to a health issue or medication, or your genitals just don’t respond well to manual stimulation, vibrators can be an excellent tool to have on hand. When choosing a vibration intensity rating, try correlating it to your ability to orgasm from manual stimulation alone - 1 would be very easy, 4 (5) would be impossible or nearly impossible. This is just a starting point and some may find that these two scales don’t line up for them. Some using a penis vibrator may have no trouble with climax on their own but still enjoy intense vibration stimulation.
General All-Over Broad Stimulation Vibrators
Some people dislike concentrated clitoris stimulation and that means they prefer what can be called “broad stimulation” to pleasure the labia, clitoris and vulva in general (which can also, if powerful enough, stimulate the internal legs of the clitoris). One really great style for this is the wand vibrator. These usually feature a large head - the old classics have a head about the size of a slightly-flattened tennis ball. Many, such as the original Magic Wand, are seriously powerful tools; great for some, overkill for others. The intense power can also create a (temporary!) numbing sensation on the vulva which will go away within minutes to hours. Other wand-style vibrators like the Doxy have many settings which allow you to start off at a very low intensity. Another popular wand-style vibrator is the small, but power packed, Pillow Talk line. Wand vibrators can also work very nicely on the penis as well as stimulation for the perineum (where many people find that pressure and/or vibrators will stimulate the prostate externally).
Small Pinpoint Stimulation Vibrators
Some people need direct vibration on their external clitoris - or at least targeted adjacent vibration for the clitoris. If you’ve ever been able to discern that one particular side or spot on the clitoral shaft is the most sensitive, this is the style for you. Vibrators in the mini/bullet or clitoral categories would work best here. Vibrations with these will range from mild and surface-buzzy (meaning the vibrations don’t travel very far on the skin or through the tissue) to powerful with deep, rumbling vibrations (these vibrations stimulate a lot of the internal clitoris and can be great for those who have difficulty orgasming from manual stimulation). One of the most popular powerful, rumbly clitoral vibrators is the We-Vibe Tango which is popular in part due to its versatility. It can replace any similarly-sized bullet in the cavity of vibrating toys that use removable bullets (like Tantus vibrating dildos), and is simply a great all-over vibrator. Those who are new to vibrators may want to start off with the Doc Johnson Black Magic Bullet - a corded, battery-powered small egg-shaped bullet that isn’t the most pinpoint but can help you decide if that may be the right course for you. It has a range of vibrations from moderate to powerful.
Vibrating Cock Rings
It’s not something that you might consider at first, and it won’t work for everyone, but the vibration cock ring has many uses. For a penis, it can be nice for solo play or partnered play. The vibrating bullet can be positioned so that it will connect with their partner’s clitoris during certain sexual positions. Similarly, it can be reversed to apply vibrations to the perineum (by having the cock ring surround penis and testicles) or just vibrate the base of the cock. These can also be put on dildos to serve as a dual stimulator. Try the We-Vibe Bond, Lelo Tor or the Je Joue Mio.
The Classic or G-Spot Vibrator as a Multi-tasker
For many who don’t need particularly pinpoint OR very broad stimulation, a vibrator billed as “classic” or “traditional” (meaning it is usually straight) or “G-spot” (meaning it is curved or has a more pronounced, tilted head) can work great both internally AND externally. The added “handle” can work wonders during many sexual positions to apply vibrations to the clitoris while keeping your hand away from the pelvis. A really great “g-spot” vibrator can work out well for any type of genital stimulation such as the Lelo Mona, the Lora DiCarlo Drift, the We-Vibe Rave or the Chic Peony. If you find one with an anal-safe flared base such as the Lelo Loki it can work great for prostate stimulation and external genital stimulation.
Penis Vibrators
These are a relatively new addition to the world of sex toys. Some simply add bullet vibrators to a traditional, soft penetrative masturbator but new creations like the Hot Octopuss Pulse are meant to be used as a stroker or stationary masturbator and deliver spot-on concentrated vibrations to the most sensitive part of the penis. To figure out if these are right for you simply try out a less expensive vibrator on your penis. If you like powerful vibrations in one spot, then choose the Pulse. If you think that all-over, yet less intense, vibration may be your thing consider a Tenga Flip Zero EV. Wand style models, such as the Man Wand, are a unique way to provide pleasure whether flaccid or erect.
